What Is

"Why," asked novelist Walker Percy, "does man feel so sad in the twentieth century? –Why in the very age when, more than in any other age, he has succeeded in satisfying his needs and making over the world for his own use?" We are so sad, says Percy, because we don’t know who we are. Trying to understand who we are is central to our project. So is understanding our place in history, politics, scientific inquiry, and creativity. We try to understand by reading, listening, convincing, writing, and exploring with Plato, Tolstoy, Kierkegaard, and O’Connor.
